Explanations of Vote:
Eskamani -
As I shared in the State Affairs Committee where this bill was heard, I condemn the comments made by the national Executive Director of CAIR. He should be held accountable, but I do not think an entire organization, including local chapters, should be punished for the comments of one man. If we treated every organization like this, then there would be no organizations left to work with. With both antisemitism and islamophobia on the rise, now is not the time to create more division within the State of Florida. We should instead be focused on listening to one another and learning from one another. Not canceling one another or in this case -- punishing an entire organization for the offensive comments of one individual.
Harris -
I wholeheartedly denounce the head of CAIR National's hateful comments regarding my people; I understand that the mission of CAIR is to improve relations with the Muslim Community, and their current leadership is failing to uphold this mission. This resolution could have easily been to denounce the head of CAIR, and he stepped down and removed himself rather than cut all ties with this organization, especially when we see divisions among people. We should be encouraging. We must continue to work towards uniting our communities. That is the ideal way to ensure safety for all of us.
Woodson -
Please know that I intended to vote Yes on this bill as opposed to No.
